…capturing the beauty (high school graduation)

June is the month of graduations!  Since I always like quotes, I was looking for the perfect one and this is what I found:  “You are educated. Your certification is in your degree. You may think of it as the ticket to the good life. Let me ask you to think of an alternative. Think of it as your ticket to change the world.  ~Tom Brokaw

We can’t express enough thanks to you.  From the time we met to plan the session, it was clear that you ‘got’ Chelsea!  The day of the session was relaxing and it was amazing to watch you in action.  Your skill is unmatched, your eye for composition is flawless, and your ability to create stunning portraits is outstanding!  Your portraits truly are works of art, Marlene!  Thank you for capturing the beauty of Chelsea and the joy of her graduation so that we can always treasure these memories!  (Chelsea – Grad) Pam & Vern Rempel, Grunthal, Manitoba

Chelsea was a dream to photograph – she didn’t take a bad portrait!  Her cotton-candy dress (that is what I thought of when I saw her dress for the first time) suited her perfectly, yet I could see the tomboy in her as well.  Tall and willowy with a gorgeous long neck; expressive hands as well – and she really got into the flow of the session.  Model material!:)

Here are some favourite images from her session.

Chelsea loved shadows as much as I did - this was our fav!

We went outdoors to do a few casual photos as well.

Today she is graduating!  Have a great day, Chelsea!

Feeling Fabulous at Fourty

Dear Marlene,
Thanks so much for the amazing experience!  I had a specific goal in mind for my photos and you surpassed my expectations.  You did an amazing job at listening to what I wanted and making that happen for me.  I will cherish these photos for a lifetime!  I so appreciated the time you took to get the lighting just right to really show off my muscle definition.  I’ve worked hard for over 2 years to get in shape and to feel “Fabulous at 40″ so I will always cherish the photos that really captured all my hard work.
Thanks again, hopefully see you at 50!!    Angela Stevenson, Morris, MB

When Angela came in for her portrait planning session, she told me she had been getting in shape and wanted to show off her muscle definition!  I immediately knew that I would be working with light to capture her shape and great abs!

I loved the opportunity to photograph her again and capture what she envisioned.  The title of her album cover was ‘Feeling Fabulous at Forty” and it suited the images perfectly!

New look to my Blog and soon a new Website

I’m so excited to introduce my new look for my Blog (even though I am still doing a bit of tweaking).  I hope you all enjoy it!

And, I’m also working on my new Website.  I’ll keep you posted when that is done!   Now – back to work.

Oh, before I leave – I just wanted to share a photo taken on April 12th at 8:12 pm.  A beautiful, Manitoba spring sunset!  This is view from my front door.  I don’t ever get tired of the trees and sky!

Fall outdoor family portraits

“I finally decided now was the time to get that family portrait done! I had always seen Marlene’s posts and read her blogs and saw the beautiful pictures she had posted. My children had been to Marlene’s school picture sessions and I had always wanted to get a really nice family picture. This past year, we’ve had a lot of personal changes in our family… my children all had graduated and knowing that in the next few years, they’d all be going onto their next adventures, I wanted to capture this moment. With my oldest already living away from home, our opportunity to pick a session was very limited. Marlene was super accommodating!! She made sure that we would be able to have a session with her. The day was a little stressful.. nobody really wanted to go and have pictures taken… nobody knew what to wear…
But, Marlene made it all work!! I am so happy with our pictures and so happy that we took the time to capture this moment!! It was well worth the effort and I will cherish my pictures for years to come!”  Ingrid, Taylor, Justin, Kaitlynn Friesen, Steinbach, MB

Taylor, Justin, Kaitlynn 2008 ‘School’ Photos

I had quite a challenge photographing Ingrid and her kids – Taylor lives away from here and could only make it for 3:00.  Normally this is a time of day I never photograph outdoor fall portraits – but I needed to make it work!  I was quite happy with the outcome.  The kids hadn’t been in the studio since 2008 so we needed to reacquaint ourselves, but it wasn’t long and I saw them relax and I got some great expressions!

Of course, one of my popular fall outdoor family portrait sets is my ‘Western’ set.  This set always works because of the overhang creating shade and is usually not too windy.  This was my favourite portrait and Ingrid chose it for her artwork on her wall!

Family Portraits at Mennonite Heritage Village

Once again I had the pleasure of photographing our local MLA, Kelvin Goertzen and his lovely wife, Kim and son Malachi.  This time we went to the Mennonite Heritage Village  in Steinbach for their portraits.

The Mennonite Heritage Village was celebrating their 50th Anniversary and Kelvin thought this would be perfect place to have their ‘official’ portraits taken.

Another reason they wanted to go here was to be photographed in the one-room Barkfield School, which was built in 1919 and now located at the Heritage Village Museum… it is the school that Kelvin’s mother attended as a child.

I first photographed Kelvin, Kim & Malachi in 2009 for their official portrait.

and then, again in 2011:

This is how they used their portraits in 2014:

I always enjoy receiving the calendar as it is small and compact and I keep it handy!

We had a beautiful fall day to photograph around the grounds of the Mennonite Village – loved the colours in this portrait.

Thank you, Goertzens, for choosing me once again to photograph your ‘official’ family portrait!
