Last Tuesday, right after the long weekend, I photographed a family that has been here numerous times over the years! I remember photographing Carissa when she turned 16 and now she is the mother of two very cute and very active young children. When you have children like this, why would you even attempt to have them sit quietly with angelic expressions? That doesn’t show what they’re truly like! I’m not saying they’re not angelic – they are gorgeous – and when they come to the studio, I get to capture their little personalities. Love it. Okay, enough said… here are some of my favorite images from that session!

One of the advantages of photographing my clients, again and again, is that we develop a wonderful rapport and it makes is so easy to get natural expressions! Peter, Trudy, Carissa, Ernest, Allie & Elijah, Jirah and Ginny – it’s always a pleasure!

The Results from my Holiday Mini-Sessions

Today was the day of my “Holiday Mini-Sessions”. I booked three sessions and all were completely different!

My first clients were the winners of my Walt Disney World trip last year! This time they decided to have just the girls photographed. Piper sat wonderfully still – but Davilyn was loving her new shoes and running around! It was hilarious – but I did get some wonderful images.

My next client has also been in previously – with her family in 2004. I had a great time with Rhonda and Kevin – what a wonderful couple!

My last family haven’t been in the studio for years, although I have photographed the kids for their school portraits for the last few years. Matthew was the easiest to get to smile. Emily was quite a poser and all of her images were fabulous – and Adam … what can I say? He was not being generous with his smiles – but he did flash me a beautiful smile on a couple images! These are my two favorites from that session!

I had a great time with these Holiday Mini-Sessions! If you’re interesting in having a portrait taken for Christmas – I have two dates left!

Three days ago was 09-09-09. How amazing is that? As a photographer, I felt I just had to go out and do some photography on that date. I did the same thing on 07-07-07 and 08-08-08.

I went out at 6:30 in the evening with my good friend Bruce Hendricks, and fellow photographer, member of The Professional Photographers of Canada-Manitoba. He was photographing an engagement couple and I was just along for the ride. We started off at the Steinbach Aquatic Centre and I found some beautiful lilies there!

On the walkway to the bridge and towards AD Penner Park I found this lonely looking leaf. What struck me was the fabulous shadow created by the setting sun.

The water is smooth as glass and the reflections are superb!

I love shadows and silhouettes!

These people were on the hill by the Picnic Shelter – listening to some music – and according to the local weekly newspaper, The Carillon… “hundreds of people came to AD Penner Park in Steinbach for some free barbequed handouts courtesy of Vic Toews. The Conservative MP dished out drinks plus just a little bit of campaign rhetoric on the side.”….

After that we headed out to LA Barkman Park. The couple informed Bruce that this is where they got engaged! As a lifelong resident of the area, I had never been to this park. It is a beautiful little park – has some wonderful walking trails and “Abe’s Hill” is quite awesome (used for tobogganing in winter).

We stopped in the parking lot and saw this awesome fence – this is my angle of the couple Bruce was photographing…

But I was distracted by the beauty of nature surrounding me… There’s something about the two fence posts that evoke in me feelings of serenity and peace…

Love the row of trees and the setting sun highlighting each one!

I heard a plane overhead and saw it was a bright red colour, which was emphasized by the sun…

Then Bruce took the couple towards “Abe Hill” and I captured their shadows with strong backlighting…

And THIS is what a Manitoba prairie sunset looks like!!!! Does it get any better than this???

Then Bruce went up the hill to the couple to do some closer images – I call this one “Photographer at Work“!

Then we headed back to the parking lot and I saw another angle of the trees and the path – and the last rays of the sun highlighting the birch trees….

I turned around for one final look at the sunset – and saw this image! I’ve always been fascinated by airplane contrails and when I looked up at the sky the sun was making one contrail stand out – I followed the contrail and saw what it was pointing to! I hope you can easily see the little puff of cloud – shaped like a heart!!! And no – this is not done in Photoshop – this is what the sky looked like!

All I can say is that my quest to photograph something – anything – on 09-09-09 ended with the perfect photograph!

Beautiful maternity portrait…

Another session I did before the end of the year, was a maternity session. Kari and Terry were thrilled to be having a baby and chose me to photograph this very special time of their lives!

This was my favorite image of the session. I love the mood in this photograph and it will be displayed in my studio shortly!

Thank you Terry and Keri and I’m looking forward to capturing those first moments with your new baby!

It’s been a while since my last post!

As most photographers know, the months before Christmas are the busiest throughout the year. That is when it seems you’re going full-tilt and non-stop, trying to photograph as many families as possible so they can gift family and friends with beautiful portraits. My busy time doesn’t stop right before Christmas – but continues the week after. Each year I open up a few days between Christmas and New Year for “Home for the Holidays” portraits. These tend to fill up quickly. On December 27th I had Andy and Brenda, Kyra and Troy come in for some family portraits. Kyra and Troy are old enough that they were very cooperative and enjoyed the session. Mom and Dad had wanted all their portraits in a beautiful Sepia tone, but when I photographed the two children together, and came up with this series of images – they loved the punch of color as much as I did – and these were ordered in color!

The rest of their images were Sepia… aren’t they a great looking family?

I then did some more romantic photos of Andy and Brenda – the kids were watching and giggled when Mom and Dad were snuggling and kissing. I love watching kids react to their parents showing how much they love each other! My favorite photo of the session!
